Lake Ellertshäuser in Lower Franconia's Filling Up Again
Andreas Kirchner from Bad Kissingen's water management office announced that Lake Ellertshäuser, the largest lake in Lower Franconia, is filling up once more. The outlet, located in the district of Schweinfurt, has been closed since December's second week. As a result, the water level is rising again, which is fantastic news for the upcoming 2024 bathing season.
Kirchner explained that by the next summer, the water level should be only 1-1.5 meters below the normal one. It's important to note that it may take several months before the lake is entirely full again, as it relies entirely on rainfall to do so.
Sailing boat owners may need to think outside the box if they wish to use their boats in the lake next summer. Kirchner warned that the water at the jetties may not be deep enough for many boats at this point.
The lake's main renovation, which began in late November 2021, is now mostly completed. The restoration of the outer lake is still underway. The construction delayed the lake's return for swimmers and sailors this summer due to further construction work and mowing in the bathing areas.
The lake is normally about 42 soccer pitches in size and holds 1.7 million cubic meters of water. It was last drained in 1983. A new dam in the main lake allows for a lower water level to be maintained during future work without completely draining the lake, according to the water management authority.
Lake Ellertshäuser, a popular recreation spot and part of the region's water management infrastructure, was created as a reservoir in the 1950s. It is now also used for flood protection.

Enrichment Insights
- Boat owners must consider alternative storage options or alter their plans for using their boats in the lake until the water level becomes more suitable.
- Lower water levels might delay maintenance activities, such as cleaning or repairing boat lifts and docks, but could also affect marine life habitats, impacting fishing or other water-based activities.
- Shallow areas may not be navigable for larger boats, and docking may be challenging due to the water level.
- Navigation hazards can arise when exposed shallow spots or areas create difficulties for inexperienced boaters, requiring extra caution while sailing.
