The ongoing transfer of Nick Woltemade, the promising young football star, has sparked controversy between Lothar Matthäus and Uli Hoeneß. But the heated exchange isn't slowing down.
A war of words has erupted between Uli Hoeneß and Lothar Matthäus during the transfer saga surrounding Nick Woltemade. Hoeneß, in a conversation with "Kicker," criticized Matthäus for his statements in the Woltemade case, calling him "not all there." In response, Matthäus fired back at Hoeneß, a longtime FC Bayern Munich patron, in an interview with "Bild." He dismissed Hoeneß' insults, accusing him of living in his own world and lacking understanding of the modern transfer market.
Bayern Munich is keen on signing Woltemade, reportedly with the striker expressing interest in the move from VfB Stuttgart, although formal negotiations are yet to commence. The transfer fee is the main sticking point as VfB Stuttgart insists on a steep price for releasing Woltemade, allegedly the sum of €100 million. This is roughly double the initial amount Bayern was willing to pay[1][2][3][4][5].
"Matthäus Thick-Skinned, Hoeneß Out of Touch"
In an interview with the "Bild" newspaper, Matthäus agreed that Bayern should pursue the signing of Woltemade given his talent. However, he found a transfer fee of €60 million too low, suggesting figures of €80-€100 million sounded more reasonable to him. Such lofty sums, Matthäus implied, are negligible to Hoeneß.
Woltemade himself declined to comment on his future plans amid the U21 European Championship.
Hoeneß' counterstrike: "Outdated Matthäus Distracting from Own Mistakes"
Matthäus retorted Hoeneß' criticism, dismissing it as old hat. "I don't let it bother me, I have grown a thick skin," he explained. Furthermore, he accused Hoeneß of "living in his own world and [not] keeping up with modern football and the business side of things."
Matthäus also believed that Hoeneß' criticisms were a smokescreen, meant to divert attention from his own errors. Matthäus cited his accurate estimation of the total value of Florian Wirtz's transfer to FC Liverpool as evidence, arguing that Hoeneß should focus on his own rather than attacking others.
