Snowboarder gets lost at night in the mountains - rescued - Lost snowboarder rescued near Garmisch after night in alpine hut
A 21-year-old snowboarder from Aachen was rescued after getting lost on the Garmisch-Classic piste. The man went missing on Sunday evening, sparking a large-scale search involving mountain rescue teams, border police, and local officers. He was found safe near an alpine hut shortly before midnight.
The incident began when the snowboarder strayed off course and ended up in the Reintal valley. With his phone battery dead, he followed the light of another hiker's lamp to an unmanned alpine hut, where he took shelter.
His friend raised the alarm around 8:40 p.m. after the man failed to return. Rescue teams, including the Garmisch-Partenkirchen mountain rescue service and the alpine response unit of the Murnau Border Police, quickly mobilised. A police helicopter crew eventually located him near the hut just before midnight.
The 21-year-old was suffering from mild hypothermia but had no serious injuries. He was taken to hospital for evaluation and later discharged.
The search operation involved multiple emergency services working together. The snowboarder's decision to seek shelter in the hut likely prevented further complications. Authorities have not confirmed the exact point where he left the piste.
