Clash in Los Angeles: Snapshots of Antagonism Towards Trump - Los Angeles Protests Confront Trump: Visual Account of Clashes

Let's delve into the ongoing standoff in the City of Angels, where unrest persists. The downtown area has turned into a battleground, with routine skirmishes happening in the city center, vehicles bursting into flames, and law enforcement resorting to tear gas and stun grenades.

Trump's Hardline Approach: Enlisting National Guard and Marines in L.A.

Not too long ago, President Donald Trump announced plans to dispatch 2,000 members of the National Guard to the L.A. protests. Normally, the National Guard, a military reserve unit and part of the U.S. armed forces, operates under state control. However, the deployment ordered by the president against the state's wishes marks a significant leap.

On a Tuesday night (German time), the Pentagon announced an additional reinforcement, with 2,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines, regular armed forces members, heading to L.A.

Highlights of the ongoing tensions

On June 6, 2025, protests surged after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents carried out raids in various locations, including the L.A. Fashion District and a Home Depot in Westlake. These raids led to the arrest of 44 individuals on grounds of suspected immigration violations.[3]

Clashes between protesters and ICE agents ensued, resulting in the use of tear gas, pepper spray, and flash-bang grenades by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to disperse the crowd.[3]

National Guard Intervention and Political Responses

The deployment of the National Guard in L.A. without the state's governor's approval represents a notable escalation in the administration's anti-deportation protest efforts.[1] This move was criticized by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, who accused the move of being a calculated attempt to stir tensions.[1]

Gov. Newsom implored protesters to maintain peace and asked President Trump to withdraw the National Guard from the area, branding it as a breach of state sovereignty.[1]

The protests and deployment have been portrayed by certain officials as a reaction to President Trump's policies, with Gov. Newsom stating that the situation transcends the deportation of criminals.[4]

Arrests and Notable Incidents

  • California SEIU President David Huerta was arrested and charged with felony conspiracy to hinder a law enforcement officer during the protests.[3]
  • Week-long immigrant arrests in the L.A. area exceeded 100, with many more held during the protests.[1]
  1. The political landscape has been influenced by the escalating tensions in Los Angeles, as Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass have criticized the deployment of the National Guard, viewing it as a calculated attempt to stir tensions, going beyond the simple issue of the deportation of criminals.
  2. In light of the ongoing protest against the administration's policies on immigration and deportations, the Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, a concern that should not be ignored in this context of general-news and crime-and-justice.
