Lorry crash in Weser Tunnel sparks chaos after icy road skid
A 50-year-old lorry driver lost control of his semi-trailer on an icy stretch of the B437 near Stadland last Friday. The crash caused chaos in the Weser Tunnel, leading to multiple closures and delays for motorists. Heavy snow and treacherous conditions across Nordenham contributed to a spike in accidents over the weekend.
The incident occurred at 14:30 when the driver’s vehicle skidded on the slippery road and struck the tunnel wall. The impact triggered the fire alarm system, forcing authorities to shut both northbound and southbound tubes as a precaution. After confirming no fire, the southbound lane reopened, but the northbound route stayed closed for nearly three hours while crews recovered the stranded lorry.
Elsewhere in Nordenham, the wintry weather led to 16 separate collisions over the weekend. Several cars became trapped in deep snowdrifts, though no serious injuries were reported. All incidents resulted in property damage only, with the tunnel crash alone causing an estimated €50,000 in repairs.
The truck driver involved suffered minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment. His name has not been released in public reports.
The Weser Tunnel crash highlights the dangers of icy roads during sudden winter weather. Emergency services worked to clear the scene and restore normal traffic flow. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution as freezing conditions persist in the region.
