In tribute, New York Governor Kathy Hochul ordered that all state government building flags be flown at half-staff in McCarthy's honor on Friday.
"Representative Carolyn McCarthy was a staunch advocate for gun control and an even more tenacious leader," Hochul said[1].
Democratic US Representative Tom Suozzi mourned the loss, stating, "The nation has lost a fierce champion". "Carolyn used her grief and loss to advocate for change, becoming one of the most dedicated gun violence prevention advocates," he added on Twitter[1].
