Get ready for a speedier journey between Dresden and Prague! The German railway giant, Deutsche Bahn, has its sights set on constructing their longest rail tunnel right in the heart of the Ore Mountains. This spectacular project aims to drastically cut down travel times between these beloved European cities.

After carefully considering various options, the preferred route now favors a single 30-kilometer-long tunnel passing through Heidenau, Germany, and Usti nad Labem, Czechia. This full-tunnel variant has proven to be the most advantageous environmentally, technologically, and economically.

Speeding Up Europe's Heartbeat

This ambitious rail project has garnered international attention due to its importance in revitalizing rail transportation. The existing route through the Elbe Valley is nearing its capacity limit, and the new tunnel will serve as both flood-proof and time-saving alternative. Deutsche Bahn's Group Representative for Saxony, Martin Walden, predicts that the trip time will decrease to less than an hour, a significant improvement over the current 2-hour journey!

The benefits of this project extend far beyond faster commutes. Saxony's Minister of Transport, Martin Dulig, emphasized that prioritizing the line's construction is a must. Deutsche Bahn confirmed that residents of the area favor this full-tunnel variant.

Construction Boom on the Eastern Front

Plans for this super-tunnel include two parallel tubes with single-track capacity for both passengers and freight trains. The German side's infrastructure will undergo upgrades as well, encompassing 46 kilometers of new tracks, modern control and safety technology, and new train stalls.

If the tunnel construction plan goes as planned, passengers can anticipate waiting for around 2 decades before first setting foot in the new tunnel. Deutsche Bahn expects to commence construction in 2032, with the project lasting approximately 12 years.

Europe's Longest Rail Tunnels: Then and Now

Germany's longest rail tunnel to date is the 10.8-kilometer Landrücken Tunnel in Hesse. In the process of becoming history, this title will be claimed by the new Eastern Ore Mountains tunnel once construction is complete. The Fehmarnbelt tunnel, under construction between Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and Denmark, is predicted to eclipse all other tunnels in length, reaching around 18 kilometers.
