Longest Hole-3s Recorded in U.S. Open Tournament History
Preparing for the 2025 US Open at Oakmont, a notorious challenge for golfers, is no mean feat – especially when trying to conquer the longest par 3 in Major Championship history. The venue, a mere stone's throw from Pittsburgh, stretches an impressive 7,372 yards and will host the tournament for a record-breaking 10th time on June 12-15.
Tough bunkering, large, undulating greens, and thick rough are the trademark features of Oakmont that make it a rigorous test for even the world's best golfers. But it's the length that truly sets Oakmont apart. Peeking at over 600 yards, the two par 3s are far from manageable, accompanied by two par 4s spanning 500 yards and a punishing 289-yard par 3 on the 8th hole that already holds the record for the longest in US Open history.
This colossal par 3, listed on the Oakmont card, pushes its adversaries to their limits, even by US Open standards. However, history shows that Oakmont has made this hole even more challenging. In the 2016 tournament, they stretched the 8th out to 299 yards in the final round, while in the previous tournament in 2007 it measured a full 300 yards.
Interestingly, the 8th hole at Oakmont has earned a special place in the top eight longest par 3s ever played in the US Open, with only the 7th and 11th at Los Angeles Country Club's North Course eclipsing the 290-yard mark. Although guidelines suggest a maximum length of 250 yards for par 3s, the prowess of modern equipment has stretched these yardages significantly.
While longer holes generally garner recognition as the best par 3s in the world, this leviathan at Oakmont embodies the traditional US Open spirit. Who knows, they might even go for the record again this year and eclipse the 300-yard mark.
