Berlin - The pitch-black limo from the taxi service waits at the Berlin campsite as SPD member of parliament, Johannes Fechner (52), steps out of his tent, donned in a suit and carrying a briefcase. This morning he had a little visit from a family of swans.

"Camping it is once again in the Bundestag," the Emmendingen-Lahr representative declared on his Instagram page. He states that he refreshes best amidst the stress of the Bundestag in fresh air and natural surroundings.

"I typically wind up my office work at around eleven or twelve at night and rise at six or seven in the morning," he recently told SWR. Renting an expensive hotel room for such a short period isn't sensible. Instead, he takes his fresh suit and laundry for the next day from the office every night.

Is Merz a cokehead? Young Liberals' provocative demand"I think many find it exotic and prefer being close to the office. For me, I'm simply glad to escape from the Berlin bubble again," the parliamentarian explained. Socializing with all sorts of people among campers is another bonus: "If the beer garden is still open in the evening, we have a Radler together."

Social Media Praises Fechner

Elected to the German Bundestag in 2013, Johannes Fechner was reappointed as parliamentary business manager and legal advisor of the SPD faction in early May.

According to his own statements, our parliamentarian has been living on the campsite between April and October during the parliamentary sessions since 2019. His tent is a small, blue one-person dome.

On Instagram, Fechner's camping activities receive mainly positive comments. One user commented, "He's kept his feet on the ground."

Starting in October, the SPD parliamentarian will sleep in affordable hotels or at a heated hut belonging to a beach club in Berlin-Mitte.
