Leaving a Lasting Impression: Charly Hübner's Struggle with the Bukow Character
Pursuit of Bukow towards the subject for a prolonged period - Long-lasting guilt plagues Bukow's conscience.
Charly Hübner (52), known for his role as Commissioner Alexander Bukow in the ARD crime series "Polizeiruf 110" from 2010 to 2022, admitted in a German edition of "Playboy" interview that the role had a profound impact on his private life and took a while to shed completely.
On January 9, 2022, Hübner said his final goodbye as Commissioner Bukow in the episode "Keiner von uns". Leaving his hometown behind, Bukow retired from the force, and according to the interview, Hübner felt the connection to his character ran too deep: "At some point, I realized that Bukow had become too much a part of me, and that doesn't fit with the concept I have of my profession."
The Character that Refused to Let Go
Hübner confessed that it took him a year after he stopped working on "Polizeiruf 110" to feel fully free from Bukow's influence: "The way he walks, for example, he had this boxer's gait. And that gruffness, his sparseness, certain quirks that have crept into my subconscious."
Now, Hübner is taking on a new challenge, a six-part anthology series called "Why I?" available from June 20 in the ARD media library. Hübner's character, Jeff Kanter, is vastly different from Bukow, with Kanter facing a surprising twist at a living room concert. Hübner's childhood fascination with cowboys drew him to this role, as he dressed up as a cowboy for every second carnival as a child: "I liked the self-made idea, not letting yourself be beaten down, that has also influenced my further path very much."
