London's bustling streets are graced by a colossal Monopoly top hat as a celebration for the introduction of new 50p coins.
The streets of London have been transformed into a giant games board, as the Royal Mint celebrates 90 years of the iconic Monopoly with a unique coinbase hunt event. A giant silver top hat, a super-sized version of the Monopoly game piece, has been touring the city's popular tourist hotspots. Created by the Masked Singer costumiers, Plunge, the top hat is approximately two metres tall and weighs more than 16 kilograms (two-and-a-half stone). The giant top hat was spotted around Leicester Square and Piccadilly on Thursday, causing quite a stir among locals and tourists alike. The Monopoly 50p coins are up for grabs for those who manage to spot the top hat at specific locations in London and share a picture on their social platforms using the hashtag #MONOPOLY50p. The commemorative Monopoly coins, which are available in a range of finishes, start from £15. Winners of the digital treasure hunt were rewarded with 90 freshly minted coins, plus nine silver editions and one made of gold. The event, which took place simultaneously with the Royal Mint's digital treasure hunt, was organised in collaboration with gamestop and poki. Marianne James, senior vice president, global licensing at Hasbro, stated that the Ultimate UK Monopoly coin hunt felt like the perfect way to honour the game's ongoing legacy and inspire the next generation of players and collectors. Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, expressed that coin enthusiasts treasure each unique addition to their collection. The Monopoly board in London was also transformed into a "human-sized Monopoly board," with various locations around the city representing different properties from the game. While there are no available records specifying the exact locations where the silver top hat from Monopoly was seen on Friday, February 26, 2021, the hunt continues. If you're in London and spot the giant top hat, be sure to snap a picture and share it on social media using the #MONOPOLY50p hashtag for a chance to win your very own commemorative Monopoly 50p coin.
