For years, grooming gangs, primarily made up of men of Pakistani descent, have been making headlines in the UK. These criminal groups target vulnerable young girls and women, subjecting them to ongoing sexual abuse. Despite repeated demands from the opposition, PM Keir Starmer has long refused to initiate a second nationwide investigation into these heinous acts.

However, Starmer has recently announced that the government will commission a second national investigation into gang-related sexual abuse cases. He made this statement to the Press Association news agency. Despite his initial resistance to similar demands from the opposition, Starmer has finally caved in to the pressure.

The victims, usually underage girls from disadvantages backgrounds, are exploited through various means such as drug and alcohol abuse, violence, and coercion. Many of the victims belong to the majority population, and there have been widespread criticisms that the police and authorities often turned a blind eye to these crimes due to disbelief or fear of being called racists, as revealed by the first investigation.

A Modern-Day Political Pandora's Box

The issue has become highly politicized and is being used by right-wing populist and extremist groups to fuel controversy. Recently, it gained significant attention when billionaire Elon Musk publicly supported the call for a second investigation and made unfounded allegations linking Starmer and other Labour politicians to right-wing conspiracy theories.

The Unraveling of the Past

Starmer had previously dismissed the idea of a second investigation, arguing that the recommendations from the first, seven-year investigation needed to be implemented first. However, he has since changed his stance, admitting that a review has led to the conclusion that a second investigation is necessary. Unlike the first investigation, these inquiries, known as Inquiries, are more about drawing political conclusions than criminal prosecutions.

The root of the problem can be traced back to the early 2010s, with instances like the Rochdale child sex abuse ring, where the perpetrators were mainly from the British Pakistani community. Similar cases were discovered in other regions like Rotherham and Huddersfield.

Authorities were initially criticized for being slow to act, with some suggesting that their hesitation was driven by a desire to avoid cultural tensions. The issue gained more attention following Professor Alexis Jay's 2015 report on Rotherham, which highlighted this issue.

In the early 2010s, several local inquiries, arrests, and convictions were made. In 2023, a Grooming Gangs Taskforce was established, involving all 43 police forces in England and Wales. By May 2024, this taskforce had arrested 550 suspects and identified 4,000 victims.

In 2024, further convictions were made under Operation Stovewood in Rotherham, but there were calls for greater transparency on the ethnicity of perpetrators. The recent announcement by Prime Minister Starmer to launch a full national statutory inquiry signals a renewed commitment to addressing the complexities of the issue more openly, including the role of ethnicity.
