London implements change: Trump no longer security precedent

On September 18, 2025, during President Trump's second state visit to the UK, an unexpected incident occurred during the President's flight to London's Stansted Airport. The helicopter carrying President Trump and First Lady Melania experienced a minor hydraulic issue, forcing an unscheduled landing at a local airfield and transfer to a support helicopter.

The near-collision occurred about 30 minutes after the presidential plane took off from Andrews Air Force Base. The passenger plane, a Spirit Airlines aircraft, was flying at approximately 2.7 kilometers lower than the presidential aircraft, and the planes narrowly missed each other with a difference of about a minute. This incident involved the President's plane and the Spirit Airlines passenger plane over the Long Island Sound.

The precise nature of the hydraulic issue on the helicopter was not specified by the White House. However, the pilots decided to land the aircraft as a precaution due to the hydraulic problem. The helicopter landing at the nearest airstrip was a precautionary measure.

Following the incident, Trump and Melania switched to another helicopter and continued to the airport, causing a slight delay in their arrival. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the incident to reporters.

Contrary to previous reports, The Independent, a reputable news outlet, did not report on this incident yesterday. The exact details of the incident were not widely publicised until now.

Despite this hiccup, the President's plane, the Boeing, narrowly avoided a critical situation during its flight to the UK. The incident serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges that come with high-profile travel, even for the President of the United States.
