London City Airport expansion approved—more passengers, same flight numbers
London City Airport has received approval to expand its operations. The UK government gave the green light in 2024, allowing the airport to increase its passenger capacity. The changes will focus on modernising aircraft rather than adding more flights.
The expansion will raise the airport's annual passenger limit to nine million. This growth will come from using larger, more efficient planes like the Airbus A320neo. These aircraft carry more travellers per flight while cutting CO₂ emissions and noise levels.
The new model also opens the door for additional routes. Airport officials expect an expanded flight network as a result. However, the number of take-offs and landings will stay the same.
Currently, London City Airport supports over 4,000 jobs in east London. The plans do not include specific details on further employment growth or capacity changes beyond 2026.
The project aims to boost passenger numbers without increasing flight frequency. Larger, quieter aircraft will replace older models, improving efficiency. The airport's network is set to grow, but no immediate job creation figures have been announced.
