Train Wreck on Sylt Intercity: 16 Passengers Injured

In a dramatic turn of events, an incident occurred on a Sylt Intercity train at 12:25 PM on Friday. This unfortunate occurrence left 16 passengers with injuries, some of them severe. As reported by Federal Police spokesperson Hanspeter Schwartz, the incident involved a collision between a locomotive and a passenger train.

The Intercity train originated from Westerland, with its intended destination being Cologne via Hamburg. However, tragedy struck around 40 kilometers from Hamburg at Itzehoe station. According to Schwartz, a locomotive apparently crashed into wagons parked on the track while shunting, doing so at approximately 20 km/h. This catastrophic event triggered a major alarm.

Consequences of the impact were far-reaching. Suitcases were sent cascading out of overhead racks, and passengers were thrown around or fell over. As a result, eleven of the injured individuals required hospitalization.

Shortly after the incident, the emergency services rushed to the scene. Eight ambulances, two emergency doctors, the fire department, emergency management, and the police all cooperated to handle the situation. Schwartz expressed relief, reporting no cases of life-threatening injuries.

Following the incident, the railway station was closed for rescue operations, and services on the affected line were suspended. The Deutsche Bahn press office provided updates, confining trains from Westerland to terminating in Heide. Meanwhile, on the line heading towards Itzehoe, only the RE7 continued to Elmshorn. A replacement service was organized to handle the area between Heide and Elmshorn.

As the investigation into this unfortunate train wreck continues, the Federal Police are exploring potential reasons for the collision. Be it technical or human error, the fact remains that 16 individuals have been left traumatized from this unforeseen incident.

Tom Knoop, a reporter from Hamburg Regional News, was quick to reach the site to gather information for domestic news coverage. The engine driver of the involved locomotive is currently under investigation, as the saga continues to unfold within the local fire department and emergency services.

A prime-time news feature followed, with the train wreck being discussed on various channels, including national and domestic news from Itzehoe and Hamburg. This incident remains a topic of intense interest and a difficult reality for those directly affected.
