The construction work on the West Tangent between Pforzheim and Birkenfeld is facing delays due to challenges with the drainage network caused by adverse weather conditions.

The government presidency, responsible for the construction site, has reported that recurring heavy rain events last week have affected the construction site, leading to difficulties in managing water runoff and stabilizing the site. As a result, some construction phases have been temporarily paused or extended to implement solutions that ensure long-term stability and safety.

Project managers are currently adapting the construction schedule to account for these setbacks. While an exact revised completion date has not been publicly confirmed, estimates suggest that the project may be delayed by several months beyond the original target. Stakeholders are monitoring weather conditions closely and adjusting work plans to recover lost time where possible.

In the meantime, daily construction sites on the B 294 will likely be carried out with the support of a traffic light system outside of rush hour. However, the full closure of the B 294 with the existing detour is likely to remain in effect until Friday, September 15, 2023. Both directions of traffic will remain open on the B 294.

It's worth noting that the tree-felling work on the B 294 between Neuenbürg and Birkenfeld was completed as planned on September 1, 2023, by the Enzkreis Forestry Office.

Difficult height relationships in the drainage network, particularly the almost non-existent longitudinal gradient, have significantly increased the time requirement for laying the new drainage pipes and connecting them to the existing network. This, along with problems with pipe laying, has contributed to the delays in the construction work on the West Tangent.

For the most precise and up-to-date information, you may want to consult local infrastructure authorities or official project communications, as they provide ongoing updates throughout the construction process.

After the full closure is lifted, final work such as installing signage will be carried out on the B 294. For safety reasons, some daily construction sites may still be necessary until the end of the year to maintain the lateral safety distance from the flowing traffic on the B 294.
