Lockdown at Naval Academy ends following threat investigation; one person sustains injuries in the incident
In a statement, Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth, a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the Naval Academy Board of Visitors, addressed the recent incident at the U.S. Naval Academy.
At 5:07 p.m., authorities responded to reports of suspicious activity on the Naval Academy grounds. Local and state law enforcement conducted an extensive search of the facility, leading to a large-scale search of the Naval Academy grounds.
The threats were made by a former midshipman who was recently dismissed from the academy. As a result, one person was injured while Naval Security Forces were clearing a building. The injured individual was medevacked with injuries, but is reported to be in stable condition.
Elfreth expressed concern about the safety and security of the Midshipmen at the Naval Academy. She quoted the Midshipmen's motto, 'Don't give up the ship,' and urged the nation to reflect on the current state of gun violence and political violence.
Elfreth thanked first responders, doctors, and nurses at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for their efforts. She is committed to working with state and local leaders, the leadership of the U.S. Naval Academy, and her colleagues on the House Armed Services Committee to ensure proper lessons are learned from the events.
In the statement, Elfreth also mentioned the recent horrific shootings on two campuses and bomb threats to Maryland state leaders and multiple HBCUs. She expressed hope that the nation can recover its collective humanity.
As of 12:17 a.m., the lockdown has been lifted and the U.S. Naval Academy has been given the all clear. The academy was placed on lockdown for several hours, causing disruption to normal activities.
An investigation is currently underway regarding the incident at the U.S. Naval Academy. Elfreth expressed that she will be closely monitoring the progress of the investigation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
