Opera Hong Kong is set to captivate audiences with its upcoming performance of the classic operetta, The Merry Widow. This production, scheduled for August 15 and 16 at City Hall, features an all-local cast of young and talented singers, showcasing Hong Kong's burgeoning opera scene.

At the heart of the story is Hanna Glawari, a character from the fictional nation of Pontevedro, played by sopranos Candice Chung Ka-yan and Rianne Lau Cheuk-ying. These talented artists share the role, bringing a unique dynamic to the character. Hanna Glawari, a recently widowed woman, has inherited a vast fortune from her late husband, sparking the interest of the local nobles who devise a plan to marry her off to a fellow Pontevedrian to keep her husband's millions within their borders.

Tenors Henry Ngan Ka-lok and Lam Kwok Ho will portray the charming Count Danilo, a character who is central to the romantic plot of the operetta. Baritone Albert Lim Chun takes on the role of the scheming Baron Zeta, adding a touch of intrigue to the production.

The creative team behind this production includes conductor Michael Koehler and opera director Tang Xinxin. Both Koehler and Tang are respected names on the international stage, bringing their expertise to this local production. Koehler conducts the performance, while Tang Xinxin directs, ensuring a seamless and engaging performance.

The Merry Widow premiered in Vienna in 1905 and has since earned a reputation for being as approachable as it is melodically rich. Based on an 1861 French comic play, L'attaché d'ambassade, by Henri Meilhac, the operetta is more conversational in music and story than capital-O opera, making it an ideal introduction to the world of opera for newcomers.

With its humorous plot, catchy tunes, and talented cast, Opera Hong Kong's production of The Merry Widow promises to be an entertaining evening out. Don't miss this opportunity to support local talent and experience the magic of opera.

The budget for the production of 'The Merry Widow' by Opera Hong Kong is financed through ticket sales and sponsorships, demonstrating the importance of both finance and entertainment industries in supporting the arts. The opera's success in captivating audiences highlights the potential for growth in Hong Kong's music scene, worthy of investment and continued support.
