Local political committees pour thousands into contests for North Texas political positions
Political action committees, or PACs, are putting their considerable monetary muscle into local elections, like the one in Irving, highlighting their increased involvement in elections that directly affect people's daily lives. Two of these committees, Families for Irving and Texans for Fiscal Responsibility, have poured over $105,000 into Irving's city council election alone.
Families for Irving, a local PAC, spent around $15,500 on the three candidates it backed, championing "traditional family values," school choice, and single-family housing. They prefer backing candidates who share these values.
Professor Cal Jillson from Southern Methodist University points out that local elections are just as important as state and national politics because PACs have ideological commitments that they want to pursue across the country or within a state like Texas.
Recently, Texans for Fiscal Responsibility shelled out money for texts sent during early voting in Irving, slamming resort company Las Vegas Sands' supposed involvement in the election. The exact amount spent by the group remains unclear, with their latest campaign finance report not available on the Texas Ethics Commission website.
Las Vegas Sands had sought a zoning change to allow for a destination resort with a casino, a proposal met with resistance from the Families for Irving PAC, even though Families for Irving does not have an official stance on casino gaming.
A 501(c)(4) organization known as the Lone Star Conservative Action Fund splurged over $93,000 on opponents to the Families for Irving PAC just before early voting began in Irving. Led by principal officer Aaron De Leon, this group has previously worked with Republican campaigns and the Texans for Opportunity and Prosperity PAC, which received funds from Las Vegas Sands.
Across North Texas, PACs have been funneling tens of thousands of dollars into local elections. PACs can have a social or economic ideological push, which can motivate support for conservative candidates in school board races, even if the person supporting doesn't live in the district.
In Fort Worth's mayoral race, at least four PACs, including the Accountable Government Fund, Fort Worth Firefighters Committee for Responsible Government, the Ryan Texas PAC, and For the Children PAC, contributed $60,000 to Mattie Parker's reelection campaign.
In the end, PACs can significantly impact local elections by providing financial backing, mobilizing interest groups, and shaping policy outcomes through strategic endorsements and donations. They can come in at the last minute with substantial funds, making it difficult for opposing campaigns to rally support in response.
It's no wonder that PACs have become a powerful force to reckon with in local politics, making it essential for voters to stay informed and educated about who's contributing to their preferred candidates and why.
