French Court Affirms Removal of Marine Le Pen's Local Office Post-Conviction

Local office of Marine Le Pen withdrawn, upholds French court decision

In a blow to Marine Le Pen, French far-right politician, the administrative court has confirmed the legal grounds for her local office removal following her conviction for misuse of EU funds. Le Pen was determined to reverse the decision that stripped her of her councilor position in the Pas-de-Calais, northern France, yet the Lille administrative court denied her plea.

Earlier in March, Le Pen was pronounced guilty and sentenced to two years imprisonment with electronic tagging, two additional years on probation, and a five-year ban on seeking electoral office, effective immediately. Although Le Pen has lodged an appeal against the verdict, it remains not yet finalized.

The prefect's subsequent act of stripping Le Pen's local office was seen by the Lille court as an execution of the verdict, not a punishment. They found no legal fault in this decision. In a public statement, Le Pen's legal team signaled their intent to challenge this judgement.

Le Pen earlier challenged the initial verdict. The five-year ban on running for public office poses significant concerns since the ban bars her from contesting in the 2027 French presidential election. The Paris Court of Appeal has promised to reevaluate the case by no later than the summer of 2026, a decision crucial for Le Pen's future political aspirations.

Meanwhile, supporters and allies of Le Pen have contested the ruling, labeling it as undue judicial interference in Le Pen's political career. Despite the verdict, Le Pen remains in her parliamentary seat until the end of her term in 2029, unless early elections are called before then[4][5].
