Strife Contenders for APC Local Council Leaders Emerge in Lagos' Primaries

Local Government Primaries within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos state: Four prospective chairmanship contenders surface

The race for the upcoming local council leaders in four areas of Lagos State, governed by the All Progressives Congress (APC), has heated up with several candidates surfacing during their local government primaries.

The consensus picks include Isa Jubril for Iba Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Motunrayo Gbadebo for Ijede LCDA, Rasaq Kasali for Lekki LCDA, and Azeez Kareem for Otto Awori LCDA. Each candidate's candidacy was endorsed by delegates during the primaries, which were still ongoing at the Ikeja party secretariat for other council areas at the time of writing.

Admonishing the delegates before the voting commenced, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, urged everyone to maintain peace and good order. Emphasizing the importance of this exercise, he stated, "Our president, the leader and father of our country, is closely watching us in Abuja. This is his state, and he values every citizen at the grassroots greatly." He also cautioned against potential disruptions, warning that tactical maneuvers by the opposing party could destabilize the situation.

To present a unified front against these external threats, the Chairman of the Lagos APC Electoral Committee, Babatunde Ogala, outlined the voting procedures. Delegates from local governments with consensus candidates would first affirm their chosen representatives. This would be followed by voting for those areas with multiple aspirants. A seamless accreditation process was reported, and several local governments had already selected their candidates internally.

Areas that did not hold primaries were excepted due to ongoing litigations. Moreover, it's worth mentioning that, unfortunately, primaries were not held in Yaba LCDA and Mainland LCDA due to these legal issues. Each of the 27 delegates from the other councils voted to elect their candidate for the local chairmanship positions.

As the July 12 Local Government elections approach, the APC candidates will face challenges and opportunities in their bids for power. Their success throughout this set their course for the looming elections. Keep an eye out for more updates as we continue to monitor the progress of the APC in Lagos State!
