Local government policy carries significant weight
In a bid to address the long-term challenges faced by municipal areas and municipalities, federal parliamentarian Kerstin Vieregge and CDU Vice-General Secretary Christina Stumpp have called for a comprehensive review of tasks and expenditures, increased municipal involvement, and reform in funding programs.
Vieregge, a long-standing member of the CDU party, recently hosted a working breakfast with Stumpp and CDU Lippe's Landrat and Mayor candidates. The discussion focused on the municipal area of Lippe, which is currently under strain.
Both Vieregge and Stumpp believe that critically reviewing tasks and expenditures and involving municipalities more strongly will lead to sustainable effectiveness. Simplifications in funding processes are also a concern, with Stumpp calling for more leeway for implementation on site and clear, practical laws instead of bureaucratic hurdles.
Stumpp, who is also the head of the CDU's municipal office in Berlin, has promised simplifications in the funding process, addressing the issue of smaller municipalities refraining from support due to the lack of funds for complex application processes. This is seen as disadvantageous for rural areas.
Stumpp emphasised that municipal politics is not a secondary issue, stating that decisions made in this area determine a municipal area's future fitness. She reiterated that politics has an immediate impact on people, affecting issues like building permits, childcare fees, and power supply.
Vieregge, in her turn, emphasised the importance of a close network of decision-makers at the federal and local levels to make municipal areas functional again. She highlighted that the 'Future Pact' anchored in the coalition agreement is seen as the right approach.
The CDU is advocating for reform in funding programs for municipalities, with additional financial resources not seen as a sole solution to the municipal areas' problems. Instead, the focus remains on sustainable solutions that ensure the long-term viability of these communities.
In conclusion, the collaboration between Vieregge and Stumpp marks a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by municipal areas like Lippe. Their efforts aim to simplify funding processes, encourage municipal involvement, and foster a network of decision-makers to ensure the long-term sustainability and functionality of municipal areas.
