Pumpkins on a trust basis - Local Farmers Embrace Honor System for Produce Sales, Despite Thefts

In Friedberg-Ockstadt and beyond, local farmers are embracing an honor system for selling produce, with mixed results. Florian Hess, a fruit and vegetable grower, offers pumpkins for sale on trust, while Obst Rhede provides seasonal fruits. While most customers pay honestly, thefts, both small and large, have occurred.

Florian Hess, based in Friedberg-Ockstadt, operates a self-pay stand for pumpkins. Customers can choose from decorative and edible varieties, including those perfect for carving around Halloween. They help themselves and pay via a trust box or PayPal. Hess reports that 85% of customers are honest, but nocturnal thefts of larger quantities have happened.

Similarly, Obst Rhede in the Wetterau region uses this direct marketing method for seasonal fruits. Hans-Jürgen Rhede shares that most customers pay fairly, but instances of theft have also occurred. Despite these incidents, self-pay stands are generally well-received, allowing consumers to support local farmers directly.

While the honor system for selling produce offers convenience and supports local agriculture, it also leaves farmers vulnerable to theft. Both Florian Hess and Obst Rhede have experienced instances of dishonesty, with nocturnal thefts of larger quantities. Despite this, the majority of customers remain honest, and the system continues to be popular among consumers.
