Local Democratic Party branch in Edo region set to choose local council heads and executive members this coming Saturday

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has confirmed that its scheduled congress, set for Saturday, September 20, 2025, will proceed as planned. This announcement comes after a restraining order was granted by Justice Mary E. Itsueli, halting local government by-elections across 59 wards in Edo State.

The court order, however, does not affect the successful conduct of ward congresses held last week, where executives were elected into the party's 192 wards. The PDP leadership, which announced the congresses for electing the chairpersons of the 18 local government areas, members of the executive committee, and a national delegate from each local government area administration, remains unchanged.

The PDP, through its counsel, Oluwole Osaze Uzzi, Michael Ekwemuka, and P. W. Akwuen, argued in court that the tenure of councillors in the affected wards remains valid until September 2026. Therefore, any move to declare their seats vacant would be unlawful.

Despite the legal proceedings, the party encourages peace during the exercise and reaffirms its commitment to due process and a transparent, credible, and constitutionally guided congress. All delegates, aspirants, and members are called to participate actively in the congress.

The congress will commence simultaneously at all PDP local government secretariats across the state from 8 am. The event is expected to elect Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen, executive committee members, and one national delegate from each of the 18 LGAs.

The Edo State High Court in Benin City granted the restraining order to the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) and the state government. The order was granted on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

The PDP, in its ongoing commitment to upholding the principles of democracy, has assured the public of its dedication to a smooth and peaceful congress. The party looks forward to the active participation of all its members in this important democratic exercise.
