Local cycling stars Tom Pidcock, Mattias Skjelmose, and others lead the roster in a mountainous one-day race taking place in Andorra.
Hey there!
Gear up, cycling enthusiasts! We've got some exciting news for you. The MoraBanc Clàssica, Andorra's first UCI one-day race, is about to make its debut on June 22. This brand-spanking new race, launched back in 2025 after years of hosting the Vuelta a España and Tour de France, will be pure Andorran territory. Originally planned for 2024 as the Classica Andorra Pirineus, it's been a long time coming, but it's gonna be worth the wait!
The race wasn't just thrown together—it's been designed with climbers and steep-terrain enthusiasts in mind. With an average gradient of 5% on the 28 km Port d'Envalira ascent, and other climbs like the Coll d'Ordino (5%), Coll de la Comella (8%), and Coll de Beixalis (8.5%), this race is all about strength, endurance, and the ability to handle those steep climbs like a boss! The final climb topping the Coll de la Botella in La Massana comes in at 7.5%.
Despite being a newcomer, the MoraBanc Clàssica has already garnered some serious attention. It's managed to attract four WorldTour teams and nine ProTeams, with some big names in the cycling world set to take part. Among them are local residents Tom Pidcock, Mattias Skjelmose, and Toms Skujiņš, and Carlos Verona, an ambassador for the event who recently won a stage of the Giro d'Italia.
As for Skjelmose, he's had to make some last-minute changes to his Tour de France preparation due to illness. But the difficulty of the MoraBanc Clàssica and its handy location for riders at home in Andorra has clearly made it an attractive prospect. It's not too usual to see Tour riders racing a one-day race so close to the big goal, but the MoraBanc Clàssica seems to be bucking that trend.
One thing's for sure—everyone's pumped for this race. Let's see who takes home the glory when riders hit the Andorran terrain on June 22!
