Local correspondence asserts that the President is concocting crises to seize control of local police forces
In a significant move, former President Donald Trump has deployed National Guard and Marines to urban areas, particularly Washington D.C., with the stated goal of addressing a perceived "crime emergency" and restoring public safety.
The deployment, which has been met with both support and criticism, is part of an anti-crime push initiated by Trump. He has emphasized the need for strength and tough law enforcement to combat escalating crime in the city.
On August 11, 2025, Trump issued an executive order declaring a crime emergency in Washington, D.C., legally authorizing the deployment of additional federal forces, including National Guard units. This action was followed by the mobilization of the National Guard Task Force, with the Department of Defense framing the mobilization as an effort "to restore safety in the nation's capital."
Trump personally visited the U.S. Park Police Anacostia Operations Facility in D.C., thanking police and military personnel involved in the operation. He described the situation as turning the capital into "a different city" due to the crackdown on crime.
While some, such as James Severtson, express concern about who will be in charge of holding D.C. police and all federal law enforcement at bay in case of another Capitol invasion in January 2029, others, like Bob Walter, question the motivation behind inserting federal troops into urban areas.
However, based on official statements and actions, Trump's publicly stated objective is crime reduction in Washington D.C. following the crime emergency declaration. It's important to note that there is no legal issue with the National Guard being called out in Washington D.C., and Trump did not need permission from any other authority to take this action.
This focus on crime reduction in urban areas raises questions about the role of federal intervention in local law enforcement and the potential implications for civil liberties. While the debate continues, Trump's actions underscore his commitment to addressing perceived crime issues and enforcing law and order in the city.
