Valencia Announces €14 Million Flood Safety Improvement Plan

Following the recent flooding and heavy rainfall incidents in the Vega Baja, particularly on the coast, the Generalitat of Valencia has announced a new flood safety improvement plan. This project, which aims to protect citizens and infrastructure from flooding and DANA storms, as well as preserve agricultural land, has a total budget of over €14 million.

The plan, which is a collaboration between the Generalitat of Valencia and the Consell, is focused on the Vega Baja del Segura and Costa Blanca area. It is part of a broader initiative by the Generalitat and local officials to enhance the resilience of the region against natural disasters.

The project's goals include addressing the issues that led to previous flooding incidents, such as those in September 2019. The aim is to improve drainage after heavy rainfall and storms to protect citizens from flooding.

One of the key aspects of the plan is the improvement of the drainage of the mouth of the Segura River. The project also includes improving the irrigation canal called the Azarbe del Senor, which carries extra water from farmland.

The Generalitat of Valencia has made flood prevention a top priority ahead of more heavy rainfall and storms. The project is a response to the need to improve the flood prevention infrastructure in the Vega Baja region.

The plan has an execution deadline of 11 months. The aim is to better protect citizens from flooding and make more use of the stored water resources. The project is also focused on the immediate need for flood prevention and the longer-term goal of preserving agricultural land and urban infrastructure.

The Generalitat of Valencia aims to preserve agricultural farmland and urban infrastructure in addition to protecting citizens against flooding and DANA storms. The series of floods that occurred in September of 2019 affected a significant portion of the population in the area.

This project is an additional effort by the Generalitat and local officials to improve flood prevention infrastructure in the Vega Baja del Segura and Costa Blanca area. The project is expected to significantly improve the region's resilience against natural disasters and ensure the safety of its citizens.

  1. This flood safety improvement plan in Valencia, with a focus on the Vega Baja del Segura and Costa Blanca area, seeks to enhance environmental-science strategies through weather-forecasting and climate-change mitigation efforts, particularly in predicting and managing heavy rainfall and storms.
  2. The project's objectives also encompass the better management of water resources, such as addressing drainage issues and improving the Azarbe del Senor irrigation canal, as part of a broader concern for agricultural-land preservation and the protection of urban infrastructure, including weather-related infrastructure like the rivermouth of the Segura River.
