Lobo offense rebounding after challenging practice periods
UNM Lobos Offense Shows Improvement After Struggles in Scrimmage
The University of New Mexico (UNM) Lobos football team demonstrated a marked improvement in their offense following a poor performance in a scrimmage, according to Coach Eck. This upturn was particularly noticeable during their 10th practice of fall camp on Saturday.
Thursday's scrimmage saw the offense struggling, with Coach Eck expressing concerns about the tempo of the defense being too fast for the offense. However, the team seems to have addressed these issues, as evidenced by their improved performance over the weekend.
Despite the absence of several key players, including wide receivers Keagan Johnson, Kader Diop, Isaiah Blair, Evan Wysong, cornerbacks Frankie Edwards III and Drew Speech, and offensive lineman Tevin Shaw, the offense ran the ball well and managed to score explosive plays.
One such play was a touchdown scored by wide receiver Zhaiel Smith on a reverse play following a field goal by the first team defense. The offense's increased aggression was also highlighted by offensive lineman Kaden Robnett, who stated that the offense needed to be more assertive during Saturday's practice.
The defense, too, showed signs of improvement, with linebacker Jaxton Eck making a notable play to stop Miller on third-and-goal. Safety Tavian Combs delivered one of the best plays of the day, stopping running back D.J. McKinney on fourth-and-short. Cornerback Jon Johnson also had a pass breakup on tight end Dorian Thomas.
Despite a poor performance in the scrimmage, quarterback Miller has had a strong camp overall. His resilience was on display during Saturday's practice, as he connected with wide receiver Shawn Miller for a catch over the top from quarterback James Laubstein to light up the offensive sideline.
The Lobos will continue to build on their progress as they prepare for their season opener against Michigan on August 30. In the coming days, the coaching staff plans to focus on game decisions and practice overtime, providing the team with valuable experience in pressure situations.
As the Lobos continue their fall camp, the coaching staff will keep a close eye on several players, including safeties C.J. McBean and Nick Wheeler, offensive lineman Jaymar Tasi, and defensive end Cody Thumlert. Their performances will play a crucial role in shaping the team's strategy and dynamics as they head into the new season.
