British National Gravel Championships: Lizzie Hermolle Triumphs in Dalby Forest
Lizzie Hermolle (DAS-Hutchinson) claimed a historic victory at the British National Gravel Championships, held in North Yorkshire's Dalby Forest. This marked her first national title and her first win after her gravel racing debut 11 months prior.
Hermolle's triumphant ride saw her pass Georgia Taylor-Brown on the final climb of the women's race. Taylor-Brown, an Olympic triathlete, had earlier embarked on a solo move, covering 90km and gaining a four-minute lead at one point. However, Hermolle's determination and grit shone through, enabling her to take the lead and secure the win.
The women's race, spanning 113.6km with over 2,200m of elevation, was a challenging one, made more attritional by the autumnal chill. Abi Smith also impressed, winning the British Gravel Time Trial Championships in the women's category.
In the men's race, Connor Swift and Ben Swift, both WorldTour riders, engaged in a thrilling battle. Swift, who had recently recovered from a fractured elbow sustained at the Renewi Tour, bridged across to Swift on the final lap. The final sprint was a nail-biting affair, with Swift ultimately emerging victorious, retaining his title in the men's race.
Ben Swift, also from Ineos Grenadiers, was the runner-up in the men's race. Jenson Young won the British Gravel Time Trial Championships in the men's category.
Hermolle's coach, Sean Yates, has been instrumental in her success. Last year, he advised Hermolle to buy a gravel bike, a decision that seems to have paid off handsomely. Hermolle's first gravel win came at the British National Championships, a testament to her hard work and Yates' strategic guidance.
