Liverpool's debut of Alexander Isak culminated in a predictable finale
Liverpool Secure Last-Gasp Victory Against Atletico Madrid in Champions League
In a thrilling encounter between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, Alexander Isak made his highly-anticipated debut for the Reds. The $170 million transfer, the third most expensive in history, was met with much excitement and anticipation.
Isak, who impressed during his pre-match warm-up with a goal in shooting practice and drew gasps from the crowd with his runs, started the game alongside Florian Wirtz in the centre of the field. Liverpool's wingers, Salah and Cody Gakpo, were pushed wider as a result.
Liverpool took an early lead when Andy Robertson deflected in a Salah free kick within five minutes. Salah then doubled the lead shortly after, leaving Atletico Madrid with a mountain to climb.
Atletico pulled one back through Marcos Llorente within the final ten minutes, setting up a tense finish. However, Liverpool created several openings from which an elite finisher like Isak would have benefited.
Isak demonstrated good skill throughout the game, drawing reactions from the crowd with his runs and shots. His link-ups with Wirtz were the most promising and lively he's looked in a Liverpool shirt.
As Liverpool pushed for a winner, Conor Bradley crossed the ball into an Isak-shaped hole, but no one else was able to finish the opportunity. In the dying seconds of added time, Virgil van Dijk headed in an outswinging corner from Dominik Szoboszlai to secure a win for Liverpool.
The players who had the greatest influence in Liverpool’s last Champions League match against Atlético Madrid in September 2025 were Robertson, Salah, and Van Dijk, each scoring crucial goals that contributed significantly to Liverpool’s victory.
Despite picking up a yellow card for a nasty challenge on Isak, Robin Le Normand was unable to halt the Reds' momentum. Isak continued to impress, even after being replaced by Hugo Ekitike just before the hour mark. Ekitike, too, impressed the fans with his hold-up play and intense pressing.
Isak's debut for Liverpool was a promising one, leaving fans excited for what's to come in the future. The Swedish international showed glimpses of his potential and will undoubtedly be a key player for the Reds in the coming seasons.
