Liverpool Street Mishap Involving Car: Key Details as Offender Is Held

A 53-year-old man was detained by police on Monday following a car collision at a parade celebrating Liverpool Football Club's Premier League victory, which left nearly 50 people injured. The suspect is believed to have acted alone and the incident is not being investigated as an act of terrorism.

According to the BBC, 27 individuals were hospitalized across the city, including a child and an adult with serious injuries. Another 20 people sustained injuries at the scene, with four of them being children, while a paramedic on a bike was also struck but managed to avoid serious harm.

On Tuesday morning, Liverpool Mayor Steve Rotheram told the BBC that there are still four individuals in critical condition at hospitals. He expressed hopes that they recover from their injuries.

Merseyside Police reported receiving reports of a car colliding into the parade around 6 p.m. local time on Monday evening, and the suspect, a local resident, was promptly apprehended by authorities.

During a press conference, police officials stated that the incident is not being treated as a terrorist act, as it appears to be an isolated incident. No additional suspects are currently being sought in relation to the incident.

Liverpool Football Club issued a statement, expressing concern for those affected by the serious incident, while emphasizing their communication with Merseyside Police.

Videos circulated on social media depict a car driving through a crowd on Liverpool's Water Street, with the crowd attempting to stop the vehicle and assault it.

Following the incident, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer took to social media to express his dismay, praising first responders and updating himself on the situation's progress. Liverpool City Council and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper also showed solidarity, describing the collision as shocking and horrendous. Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative party leader, expressed her sympathies, noting the high number of children among the injured, regardless of whether it is classified as a terrorist incident.

In statements from English soccer clubs, the Premier League and Liverpool's historic rivals Manchester United expressed their concerns, while Everton FC, the city's other major football club, also extended their sympathies to those affected.

An Isle of Man resident, Peter Jones, recounted witnessing the incident, telling the BBC he heard a frantic beeping noise approaching and saw a car drive past him with injured individuals nearby. Another witness, Harry Rashid, described the collision as happening incredibly fast, with the sound of people being knocked off the car's bonnet.

The parade was held following Liverpool FC's win of the Premier League title, ending Manchester City's run of four consecutive titles. The historic club secured their 20th league title overall, although their previous win was in 1990. On Sunday, the team lifted the Premier League Trophy at Anfield stadium for the first time in front of a packed stadium since their previous victory during the COVID-19 pandemic.
