Liverpool smash their transfer record to recruit Germany midfielder Florian Wirtz
Huge Transfer Move: Liverpool Shatters Records with Florian Wirtz Signing
London – Liverpool FC has made waves in the football world by splurging a whopping £116 million on Germany's Florian Wirtz, shattering their previous transfer record. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder, who penned a five-year deal, is now the most expensive signing in Liverpool's history, surpassing Virgil van Dijk.
The deal, announced on June 20, 2025, includes a guaranteed £100 million and potential bonuses worth up to an additional £16 million. With this move, Wirtz joins a select group of players who have been signed for more than £100 million in the Premier League. Some of his fellow club members include Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo – both Chelsea midfielders, Declan Rice, and Jack Grealish, who formerly played for Manchester City.
Speaking about his new adventure, an elated Wirtz stated, "I'm really excited to embark on a fresh journey. I was keen on exploring new horizons, having spent two years at Leverkusen, and choosing the Premier League seemed like the perfect choice."
In his time at Leverkusen, Wirtz was instrumental in helping them achieve an undefeated domestic league and cup double during the 2023-24 season. Despite losing two league seasons away, they still managed to secure impressive victories. Wirtz scored 57 goals and provided 65 assists in 197 appearances for Leverkusen since joining the club from Cologne in 2020. Last season, he netted 16 goals and racked up 15 assists as Leverkusen finished second in the Bundesliga.
Boasting 31 caps for Germany since his debut in 2021, Wirtz is the only player to register double-digit goals and assists in the last two Bundesliga seasons, setting him apart from his peers.
As for Liverpool manager Arne Slot, Wirtz's arrival bolsters his midfield options, alongside Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Curtis Jones. Wirtz's versatility further allows him to play as a left winger or false nine, adding more depth to Liverpool's lineup.
Wirtz's signing represents a statement of intent from Liverpool as they aim to build on their success under Slot, who made history by becoming the first Dutch manager to win the Premier League, as well as the sixth coach to do so in their inaugural season.
With Jeremie Frimpong already signed and Milos Kerkez linked with a move, Liverpool is gearing up for an exciting new chapter.
