Liverpool intensifies pursuit of Leverkusen prodigy Wirtz, according to media reports
Liverpool in Advanced Talks with Bayer Leverkusen Over Second Offer for Midfielder Florian Wirtz
Liverpool's latest offer for Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz is reportedly close to securing the promising midfielder's transfer, making him the most expensive signing in the club's history. Add-ons and the payment structure are currently under discussion.
Wirtz, who turns 23 next month, has attracted interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester City, but Liverpool seems to be his preferred destination. It is believed that he has agreed to join Liverpool ahead of the new season.
Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes confirmed Liverpool's "concrete interest" in Wirtz last Monday. Previously, Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro had insisted that a bid of £125 million would be needed to secure Wirtz's services.
The German midfielder made a name for himself in the 2023-24 season, helping Leverkusen win their first Bundesliga title, for which he was named the league's player of the season. This season, he scored 10 goals in 31 Bundesliga matches, contributing to Leverkusen's second-place finish behind Bayern.
Wirtz has already scored 57 goals in 197 appearances for Leverkusen since his debut at 17, following his transfer from Cologne in 2020.
Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Arne Slot is also on the brink of securing another transfer. The Reds are understood to have triggered a £30 million release clause for Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong, the Netherlands international right-back, and Frimpong is scheduled for a medical with Liverpool this week.
Frimpong's arrival would serve as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who recently agreed to move to Real Madrid.

Liverpool's potential acquisition of Florian Wirtz, the prolific German midfielder, could make him the club's most expensive signing ever, as they aim to secure his services from European leagues, particularly the Premier League. If the transfer goes through, Wirtz may find himself competing in international sports like football alongside other top-tier players from the Premier League, including those from Bayern Munich and Manchester City.
