Fans perform iconic Liverpool anthem - Liverpool FC Makes History with BSL Version of You'll Never Walk Alone at Anfield
Liverpool FC has become the first football club in the world to introduce a British Sign Language (BSL) version of its anthem, You'll Never Walk Alone, for football games today. Before the Premier League match against West Ham United on 28 February 2026, fans performed the anthem in sign language, aiming to include deaf and hard-of-hearing supporters in one of football's most iconic traditions. An international study recently revealed that 81% of deaf and hard-of-hearing fans want to join in stadium singing but feel left out. Liverpool's initiative seeks to change that. The historic moment took place at Anfield on 28 February 2026, during the Red Together fixture—a matchday dedicated to equality, diversity, and inclusion. For the first time, the club's famous anthem was signed in BSL before kick-off, allowing deaf and hard-of-hearing fans to participate fully in the emotional pre-match ritual. From now on, every home football game for both the men's and women's teams will feature Fanslators—BSL interpreters who will translate live announcements and the anthem into sign language. Next season, their role will expand further to cover more matchday experiences, ensuring deeper engagement for deaf supporters. Beyond the pitch, the club is rolling out basic BSL training for service and bar staff at Anfield. Similar programmes will soon extend to Liverpool FC pubs and fan bars worldwide. The initiative reflects the club's long-standing motto, You'll Never Walk Alone, reinforcing a sense of unity among all fans. No other football club has introduced a comparable programme. Liverpool's partnership with Carlsberg to launch this project marks a first in global football, setting a new standard for accessibility in the sport. The BSL performance at Anfield is part of a wider push to make football more inclusive. Deaf and hard-of-hearing fans will now have better access to matchday moments, from announcements to the club anthem. With staff training and expanded interpreter roles, Liverpool FC is ensuring that no supporter is left behind.
