Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold proclaims his team's return to their rightful place following their re-emergence in the Champions League competition.
Liverpool Kick Off Champions League Campaign with 3-1 Victory Over AC Milan
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool started the 2022-2023 Champions League season on a high note, defeating AC Milan 3-1 at San Siro stadium. The first goal of the match was scored by Christian Pulisic for AC Milan after just three minutes, but Liverpool responded swiftly.
Alexander-Arnold, who took a short break in the summer after helping England reach the Euro 2024 final, provided the assist for Ibrahima Konate's equaliser, his 80th for Liverpool, making him the third-highest in the Premier League since his debut in October 2016. Virgil van Dijk scored a header later in the first half to give Liverpool the lead, and a second-half goal from Konate secured the victory.
Since his Liverpool debut, Alexander-Arnold has contributed approximately 86 to 90 assists for the club across all competitions up to 2025. He notably set records as a defender for most assists in a Premier League season, reaching 12 assists in a single campaign, breaking previous records held by players such as Andy Hinchcliffe, Leighton Baines, and Andrew Robertson.
Alexander-Arnold's impressive performance against AC Milan was his fifth appearance for Liverpool this season under Arne Slot. The defender-cum-midfielder expressed his delight with the team's performance and the result, stating that Liverpool are "back where they belong" in the Champions League.
Alexander-Arnold also started both of England's Nations League fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland earlier this month. Despite missing out on the Champions League last season, Alexander-Arnold expressed disappointment at the time, but he is now focused on helping Liverpool regain their position among Europe's elite.
The match against AC Milan was the first game of the revamped Champions League competition for Liverpool. The team will look to build on this victory as they continue their journey in the tournament.
