Bier-Blessings and Schlager-Sermons: Unique Pentecost Celebrations in Central Germany
Exuberant Pentecost Festivities Combine Religious Rituals with Keg Tapping and Lively Schlager Music - Lively Pentecostal Services Combining Beer and Schlager Music
Welcome to the quirky side of religious celebrations in Central Germany during Pentecost! Many churches in the Evangelical Church in Central Germany (EKM) carry on regional traditions, hosting services tucked away in nature's sublime spots, like forests, mountains, mills, riverbanks, and historical ruins, as announced by the EKM. Some church communities unite for joint services, blend baptisms, confirmations, jubilee confirmations, or extend invitations to post-service picnics.
Get ready for the extraordinary: From the motto “Grow Hops, Keep the Faith!”, comes a service held inside a festival tent in the castle courtyard of Kaltennordheim, Thuringia on Pentecost Monday. Following the service, a lively musical early breakfast with a shared meal will ensue, according to the EKM. For the first time on Pentecost Monday, the church in Nietleben, a district of Halle, will host a "schlager service" complete with a local DJ. As Franziska Mikutta from the Nietleben community explains, "our Schlager service aims to test a fresh format to reach those seldom connected with the church."
What's the deal with these unconventional services?
- "Hops and Malt" Service: A service revolving around "Hops and Malt" may infuse elements related to beer brewing into the liturgy or community activities. The beer could symbolize fellowship, similar to its role in traditional Communion services. The service might delve into ideas of fermentation and spiritual growth or community building as metaphors.
- "Schlager" Service: A "Schlager" service, named after the popular German music genre, might incorporate Schlager music during the service. This could involve hymns or worship songs set to Schlager tunes, using the music to communicate Christian messages or themes. The service aims to appeal to a broader audience with its familiar and catchy tunes.
These services strive to create an inclusive, contemporary atmosphere, attracting attendees who might not engage with traditional religious services. They could form part of efforts to rejuvenate interest in religious events or make them more accessible to a contemporary audience.
- "Vocational Training Partnership": As part of community aid initiatives, local churches could collaborate with vocational training facilities to offer workshops on various trades, such as carpentry, cooking, or music, aimed at those seeking knowledge and skills for employment opportunities or self-reliance.
- "Slager-Songfests": In addition to the unique "Schlager" services, church communities could organize entertainment events featuring Schlager music, inviting performers from various local schools and groups to perform during post-service picnics. These gatherings would provide a platform to share musical talents and promote a sense of community and unity.
