In its yearly report, Amnesty International claimed that Israel intentionally targeted Palestinians residing in Gaza, amounting to genocide.

Israel, along with various human rights groups and governments, has refuted charges of genocide in its Gaza conflict.

The strife originated from Hamas's lethal attacks on Israeli citizens on October 7, 2023, resulting in a tragic loss of 1,218 lives, predominantly civilians, according to an AFP tally from official Israeli figures. Moreover, 251 people were kidnapped, with 58 of them currently held captive in Gaza, including 34 the Israeli military declares deceased.

In response to these attacks, Israel launched a relentless bombardment of Gaza and mounted a land operation, as per the health ministry in the Hamas-governed territory, resulting in the death of at least 52,243 individuals.

Agnes Callamard, Amnesty's secretary general, explained in the report introduction that the global audience was essentially spectators to a live-streamed genocide. She contended that nations indolently watched on, permitting Israel to annihilate thousands of Palestinians, destroy families, homes, hospitals, and schools, threatening the lives of countless citizens.

As tensions continued to escalate, Gaza's civil defense agency announced early Tuesday that four civilians were killed, and several others were wounded in an Israeli air strike on displacement tents near Al-Iqleem. The agency had previously reported fuel shortages, forcing the suspension of eight out of 12 emergency vehicles in Southern Gaza, including ambulances, imperiling the lives of hundreds of thousands of citizens and displaced individuals.

Amnesty's report asserts that Israeli actions in 2024 led to the displacement of 1.9 million Palestinians, accounting for nearly 90 percent of Gaza's population, inflicting an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe upon the citizens of Gaza. Despite protests in major Western capitals, the world's governments have failed to take decisive action to end the atrocities and were sluggish even in advocating for a ceasefire.

Amnesty flagged concerns over Israeli actions in the West Bank occupied territory, reinforcing accusations of apartheid. Israel's policy of separating Palestinian territories has been questioned for its frenzied violence against Palestinians in the West Bank and attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian civilians.

Heba Morayef, Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa regional director, sharply criticized the prolonged suffering inflicted daily upon Palestinians in Gaza and the overall inability of world powers to prevent such brutality.

The ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been a persistent concern since the late 19th century. Complex historical and political factors have exacerbated tensions between the two parties.

In 1917, the Balfour Declaration, a British statement pledging support for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine, sparked escalating tensions between Jewish settlers and the local Arab population. This tension culminated in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, collectively referred to as the Nakba or "catastrophe."

A series of significant wars and uprisings in the following decades, including the Six-Day War in 1967, where Israel occupied Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, as well as the First and Second Intifadas, characterize the ongoing conflict.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a surprising attack on southern Israel, igniting hostilities between Israel and Hamas. The ongoing conflict has been marked by continuous military operations from both sides.

International human rights organizations have criticized both parties for potential violations of international humanitarian law due to reported civilian casualties and destruction. Apartheid allegations have been leveled against Israel due to its control over Palestinian territories and the separation policies in place. However, these accusations are contested by Israel.

  1. Amnesty International's warning about Israel's disproportionate actions in Gaza, especially in 2024, urged nations to intervene to halt the ongoing war-and-conflicts, as the actions led to the displacement of almost 90% of Gaza's population, causing an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.
  2. Daily, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict serves as a general-news headline, with continuous reports of crime-and-justice concerns, such as the killing of civilians and the destruction of homes, hospitals, and schools.
  3. Despite protests in major Western capitals, world politics have failed to take decisive action to end the atrocities in Gaza, leaving Palestinians suffering daily under the weight of Israel's armed response to Hamas attacks.
  4. In addition to the ongoing strife in Gaza, Amnesty International flagged concerns over Israeli actions in the West Bank occupied territory, continuing to reinforce accusations of apartheid due to Israel's policy of separating Palestinian territories.
  5. Looking back at historical events, the end of World War I saw the Balfour Declaration in 1917, which sparked escalating tensions between Jewish settlers and the local Arab population, ultimately leading to the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
  6. As the Israeli-Palestinian conflict persists, it remains a topic of ongoing interest and concern in the realm of Africa, with communities expressing solidarity and calling for a peaceful resolution to the longstanding issue.
