Streaming Shake-up Ahead for Premier League Matches
Gear up for another streaming service subscription, sports fans! The world of premier league matches is about to get a bit more complicated.
It seems that Warner Bros Discovery is planning another split, with different services and shows shuffling around. One confirmed shift is that TNT Sports streaming will move from Discovery+ to HBO Max when it launches in the UK and Ireland next year.
Over the years, we've seen Amazon, BT Sport, Discovery+, and Sky's own services hosting premier league football matches on their streaming platforms. This streaming buffet has left avid sports fans with a hefty bill for numerous paid subscriptions.
But that might be about to change.
The owner of TNT Sports and Discovery+ is undergoing a shake-up, with Warner Bros Discovery looking to split again after merging just three years ago. And as part of the split, international sports coverage is heading to HBO Max, allegedly including TNT Sports' premier league rights.
TNT Sports recently extended its rights package with the premier league, securing the rights to show 52 live matches per season up to and including the 2028/29 season. These matches are currently available on traditional broadcast platforms with a subscription and also on Discovery+. However, it is now said that the Discovery+ streaming service is heading to a newly formed Global Networks division as part of the WBD split.
While Sky's premier league coverage remains unaffected by the WBD split, the TV giant plans to significantly increase the number of live matches it will offer next season across Sky Glass, Sky Stream, Sky Q, and Now, to a massive 215!
Interestingly, Sky will lose exclusive rights to HBO programming from the end of 2025. But fear not, HBO Max will be available on Sky's TV services too, so you won't miss out on your favorite shows like Game of Thrones, Succession, and The Last of Us.
