Live show Jimmy Kimmel placed on hold due to remarks concerning Charlie Kirk's alleged murder.
In a surprising turn of events, ABC has suspended the late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely following comments made by the host about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The suspension was announced just hours after Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr issued a warning that broadcasters could face fines or license revocation if they didn't act against Kimmel's show.
Kimmel's original comments were made during his Monday and Tuesday monologues. He criticized MAGA supporters for "trying to score political points" and mocked Vice President JD Vance for blaming the political left without evidence. Kimmel also cited research attributing most extremist violence in the U.S. to far-right groups.
Nexstar Media, one of the largest U.S. station owners, has decided to stop airing Jimmy Kimmel Live! nationwide due to the host's offensive and insensitive remarks. Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns the most ABC affiliates, plans to air a tribute to Charlie Kirk during Kimmel's timeslot. The initiative was taken by Sinclair Vice Chairman Jason Smith.
The suspect charged with killing Charlie Kirk is 28-year-old Tyler Robinson, now facing aggravated murder and other charges. ABC, which is owned by Disney, confirmed it would replace Jimmy Kimmel Live! in its schedule "for the foreseeable future."
Trump, who has been vocal about his disapproval of Kimmel's comments, praised the suspension on social media, calling it "great news for America." He also took a jab at Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, referring to them as "total losers." This jab comes two months after Stephen Colbert's show was canceled. Interestingly, Trump congratulated ABC for its "courage" in suspending Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
As of now, Kimmel has yet to issue a public statement about the suspension of his show. The future of Jimmy Kimmel Live! remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the comments made by Kimmel have sparked a significant reaction, leading to the suspension of his show and a nationwide debate about freedom of speech and the role of late-night television hosts.
