Live coverage: Rayados de Monterrey vs Mazatlán - Day 5 of the 2025 Liga MX season kickoff

In the Apertura 2025 Liga MX tournament, Monterrey and Mazatlán faced off in a highly competitive match on Matchday 5 at the Steel Giant stadium. The Rayados de Monterrey emerged victorious, winning 3-2.

The first half of the game was action-packed, with both teams demonstrating their offensive prowess. Mazatlán took an early lead in the 13th minute, as José Joaquín Esquivel scored the opening goal. However, Monterrey quickly responded, with Víctor Guzmán equalizing just two minutes later, making the score 1-1.

The momentum continued to shift as Lucas Ocampos scored twice for Monterrey, first at the 25th minute and then a decisive goal in the 45th minute plus 5 minutes of added time. This put Monterrey ahead before halftime, with a score of 3-1.

In the second half, Mazatlán fought hard to get back into the game. Omar Moreno scored in the 82nd minute to reduce the deficit, but Monterrey held on to their lead to secure the victory. The match featured intense moments, with defensive saves such as one by Monterrey’s "Corcho" Rodríguez that prevented further goals for Mazatlán late in the game.

This win extends Monterrey’s winning streak in Liga MX to four consecutive matches, showcasing their strong performance both offensively and defensively. The game was competitive with a back-and-forth momentum, but Monterrey’s late first-half goals proved decisive.

Mazatlán has only one victory in the tournament, earned in matchday 2 against Puebla at home. This loss leaves them still seeking a win to secure a spot in the playoff qualification zone. On the other hand, Monterrey aims for a victory to place them alongside Pachuca at the top of the standings with 12 points.

It's worth noting that the Canoneros have won only once in 10 encounters against Monterrey, who have won six times, with three draws completing the head-to-head record. The most recent win against León was achieved with goals from Jesús 'Tecatito' Corona, Ricardo Chávez, and Sergio Canales.

Domenec Torrent's squad has maintained a perfect record in the local tournament after their win against León. The Rayados de Monterrey will look to continue their winning streak in their upcoming matches.
