Live Coverage: President Milei Conducts Cabinet Meeting at Casa Rosada as Vetoes Are Overruled in Congress
In international news, President Javier Milei of Argentina recently visited Paraguay, where he addressed the Paraguayan Congress, emphasising the bilateral relationship and joint projects to promote foreign trade and facilitate the transportation of passengers and cargo. Among the proposed projects are the construction of a bridge between Misión La Paz and Pozo Hondo, optimising a waterway, signing air agreements, and streamlining procedures at border crossings and migration agreements.
Back in Argentina, the opposition is pressing to secure numbers and overturn the vetoes to the law of the Garrahan and university financing in the Chamber of Deputies, following President Milei's announcement of increases in allocations for pensions, health, and universities in 2026.
In domestic affairs, the government of President Milei sent a bill to the Chamber of Deputies that prevents the sanctioning of laws that do not have assured financing and also establishes a prison sentence of up to 6 years. The Minister of Defense led the supervision of Operation 'Julio A. Roca' in the Salta town of Tartagal, aimed at reinforcing military presence on the northern border of Argentina, to protect sovereignty, ensure territorial integrity, and combat drug trafficking, smuggling, and other transnational crimes.
Meanwhile, Patricia Bullrich led a simulation of anti-disturbance practices and delivered an equipment plan destined for Federal Forces in infrastructure and technology.
In another development, Guillermo Francos, a key member of the administration, met with DAIA authorities to discuss a guide for addressing antisemitism, discrimination, and hate speech on networks. Francos also defended the administration amid the scandal caused by alleged bribes in the Disability Agency (ANDIS), assuring that 'there has been no government corruption.'
Ahead of the legislative elections on October 26, electoral roll irregularities were detected in Aguas Blancas, a municipality on the border with Bolivia, where there are more voters than residents.
On the economic front, Federico Sturzenegger criticised the opposition for the session in the Chamber of Deputies to repeal decrees on decentralized organisms, stating that the taxpayer should not be a hostage to the political dispute. National deputy Fernando Iglesias questioned 'the hypocrisy' of leaders who did not complain about the adjustments made by Sergio Massa in his time as Minister of Economy during the government of Alberto Fernández.
In foreign policy, Gerardo Werthein, the Federal Chancellor, and the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Johann Wadephul, held a meeting in Berlin to discuss the possibility of advancing towards a strategic association in energy and critical minerals. This discussion follows Werthein's visit to Germany, France, and Poland during his working sessions in Berlin in September 2025, where discussions focused on enhancing bilateral trade, climate cooperation, and regional security.
Before concluding his visit to Paraguay, President Milei thanked his counterpart Santiago Peña and the Paraguayan people for the 'honor' of the invitation. He highlighted the management of the neighbouring country in recent years, stating that Paraguay has managed to leverage its local industry with genuine job placements, while Argentina finances a deficit-ridden industry. After the meeting, Milei headed towards the Quinta de Olivos.
Lastly, Martin Lousteau, a prominent figure in Argentine politics, referred to the presentation of the 2026 Budget Law project and said, 'It's positive that Milei presented a budget. I think he doesn't want it, he manages very well without having one.'
