Australia's T20I Winning Streak Comes to an End in Darwin

Australia's record-breaking run in T20 International (T20I) matches came to an end on August 12, 2025, in Darwin, after a thrilling encounter against South Africa. The Kangaroos had been on a 9-match winning streak, their longest in T20Is to date, but a narrow loss ended their bid to extend it to 10 consecutive wins.

Before the series, Australia had been on a 5-0 winning run against the West Indies. However, the South Africans presented a tough challenge, with the first T20I ending in a nail-biting finish. The Australians displayed their power-hitting prowess, smashing 13 sixes in the match, compared to South Africa's two. Despite Ryan Rickelton's impressive 71 runs off 55 balls for the Proteas, they fell short by just 3 runs. A spectacular catch by Glenn Maxwell in the final over sealed the fate of the match for Australia.

The second T20I was set to be a crucial encounter, with a win for Australia potentially extending their record of consecutive T20I victories. However, it was South Africa who emerged victorious, securing a historic win over Australia in a multi-game T20I series for the first time since March 2009 (2-0).

The Proteas' squad for the second T20I included Aiden Markram (captain), Ryan Rickelton (wicket-keeper), Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubbs, George Linde, Corbin Bosch, Senuran Muthusamy, Kagiso Rabada, Kwena Maphaka, Lungi Ngidi, Rassie van der Dussen, Prenelan Subrayen, Nandre Burger, and Nqabayomzi Peter.

On the Australian side, the squad for the second T20I featured Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh (captain), Josh Inglis (wicket-keeper), Cameron Green, Tim David, Mitchell Owen, Glenn Maxwell, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood, Matthew Short, Sean Abbott, Aaron Hardie, and Matthew Kuhnemann.

The second T20I between Australia and South Africa was live streamed on the JioHotstar app and website in India, and telecast on the Star Sports Network TV channels. The match was played at the Marrara Stadium in Darwin at 2:45pm IST.

Despite the loss, Australia still holds a strong position among full-member nations, sharing the record for the most consecutive T20I wins with Pakistan and New Zealand. However, they are still behind India and Afghanistan, who hold the record for 12 consecutive T20I wins each. The all-time international record for most consecutive T20I wins belongs to Uganda with 17 straight victories.

Despite the setback, the Aussies will be looking to bounce back in future matches and reclaim their position at the top of the T20I rankings.

Australia's T20I winning streak against South Africa came to an end after a close game in Darwin, making it difficult for them to extend their record of 10 consecutive T20I victories in the same series. Despite the disappointing loss, Australia remains a strong contender in T20I cricket, sharing the record for the most consecutive wins with Pakistan and New Zealand.
