Live broadcast ends tragically as popular French streamer succumbs to months of alleged mistreatment on air
In a shocking turn of events, Raphaël Graven, a popular French streamer who went by the online alias Jean Pormanove or JP, passed away during a nearly 12-day live stream. The news has sent ripples through the gaming community, with many expressing their condolences and raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Graven, a military veteran, had built a following of over a million across various platforms. His streams were known for their extreme challenges and often featured collaborations with other streamers, including Owen Cenazandotti, known as Naruto, and Safine Hamadi.
During his final livestream, Graven's fellow streamers reportedly competed to see how long they could throttle him, and he was shot with paintballs and doused with water. For months leading up to this incident, Graven was humiliated and mistreated live on the Kick platform.
According to a lawyer for Owen Cenazandotti, Graven had cardiovascular problems. It is unclear whether these issues were exacerbated by the mistreatment he endured during the livestream. Cenazandotti and Hamadi were briefly detained as part of a police investigation into the humiliation of vulnerable people in January 2025, but they have not been charged with any crime.
Thanks to donations from subscribers, the group earned money from the livestreams, with a counter at the top of the screen suggesting the group had earned some 36,000 euros ($42,000) from the days-long stream. Clara Chappaz, French Secretary of State for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Affairs, has expressed that Graven's death and the violence he endured are an "absolute horror."
An investigation has been opened into Graven's death by the Nice prosecutor's office, and an autopsy has been ordered. Kick, the streaming platform, has stated that it will cooperate with the investigation.
In the past, Graven appeared to be the target of jokes, bullying, physical attacks, and degrading stunts in dozens of videos from past livestreams. Graven himself often spoke about his desire to marry and have children, but this wish was often met with mockery from his co-streamers.
No comment has been received from Graven's mother or Safine Hamadi regarding the incidents. Cenazandotti, however, has filed a complaint with authorities that he is being harassed online since Graven's death.
As the investigation continues, the gaming community is left to grapple with the loss of a prominent figure and the troubling circumstances surrounding his death.
