Live-Action Adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon Unveils Inspirational First Trailer, Drawing Comparisons to Animated Original
Universal Pictures has unveiled the first teaser trailer for the much-anticipated live-action adaptation of the beloved animated film, How to Train Your Dragon. The film, set to release on June 13, 2025, promises to bring the magical world of Vikings and dragons to life once more.
The live-action How to Train Your Dragon is based on the original 2010 animated film, which told the story of a tribe of Vikings who hunt dragons, except for the chieftain's son, Hiccup, who befriends a jet-black dragon named Toothless. In the live-action version, Hiccup is portrayed by Mason Thames, while Toothless features CG animation that looks spectacular.
The teaser trailer, which leaked ahead of its official release in non-U.S. territories, focuses on the memorable first meeting between Hiccup and Toothless, replicating the original film's big referential moment of Toothless accepting Hiccup's head pats. The trailer also showcases the sweeping vistas, ship craftsmanship, and Gerard Butler as the chieftain, Stoick.
The live-action film is written and directed by Dean DeBlois, who co-wrote and co-directed the animated original and wrote and directed its two sequels. Alongside Butler, the film stars Nico Parker as Astrid, Nick Frost as Gobber, and Julian Dennison as Fishlegs. In the German dubbing of the film, Astrid is voiced by Nico Parker, Olaf Reichmann as Gobber, and Oliver Szerkus as Fishlegs.
The set pieces for the Viking village in the live-action film are comparable to the animated films, maintaining the original's authenticity and charm. However, some critics have expressed concerns about the first official still image of the film, which they found to be desaturated and lacking in whimsy. Fortunately, the trailer did not receive similar criticism.
How to Train Your Dragon originally released in 2010 and became popular, leading to two sequel films, five short films, and two TV series. The film's success has been such that alongside the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek films, the future of the DC Universe on film and TV, and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who can be found on io9.
The live-action How to Train Your Dragon film sees Hiccup training Toothless in secret from his fellow dragon-killing Vikings. As the film's release date approaches, fans of the original animated film can look forward to revisiting this captivating world and the heartwarming friendship between Hiccup and Toothless.
