Lithuania's President proposes setting a timeline for Ukraine's entry into the EU

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has put forward a bold proposal to accelerate Ukraine's European Union (EU) accession process. During an online meeting of the European Council, Nausėda suggested setting a specific target date of 2030 for Ukraine's accession and opening the first cluster of accession negotiations as early as September 2025.

This proposal, if implemented, would send a powerful signal to Kyiv, according to Nausėda. He believes that establishing a fixed date would help both Ukraine and the EU plan reforms and resource allocations effectively.

Lithuania is actively pushing to unblock Ukraine’s EU accession process. Nausėda has proposed initiating negotiations at a technical level with Ukraine and Moldova, even if Hungary opposes, provided 26 EU member states agree. This initiative aims to bypass Hungary’s veto, which has stalled progress.

Nausėda also emphasized the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia through sanctions. He advocated for the swift adoption of an additional sanctions package and suggested using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.

However, the European Commission remains cautious, maintaining that unanimous agreement among EU member states is required to open any negotiation chapters. This skepticism about bypassing Hungary’s veto may pose a challenge to Nausėda's proposal.

The news of Nausėda's proposal was reported by LRT. The proposal is significant as it reflects Lithuania's strong support for Ukraine's EU membership and its commitment to punishing the Russian regime for the war in Ukraine. The proposed EU membership date for Ukraine, according to Nausėda, is 2030, with the first cluster of negotiations set to begin in September 2025.

Key conditions for this proposal include support from the US and the possibility of deploying peacekeeping forces in Ukraine. The proposed date for Ukraine's EU accession, according to Nausėda, is September 2025. These developments underscore Lithuania's proactive role in advancing Ukraine's membership talks within the EU.
