Lithuanian Social Democrats elect Prime Minister Paluckas as their new chairman.
Lithuania's Social Democratic Party Gets a New Helm: Gintautas Paluckas Takes Charge
In a resounding victory, Gintautas Paluckas, former Prime Minister of Lithuania, has been elected as the chairman of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP).
Preliminary results from the party leadership elections held on Saturday reveal that Paluckas bagged 5,065 votes from the 6,418 LSDP members who cast their ballots. His nearest competitor, Juozas Olekas, the deputy parliament speaker, managed a distant second with 745 votes, while Akmene Mayor Vitalijus Mitrofanovas rounded off the top three with 593 votes. A total of 49.93% of party members participated in the voting.
The final results will be confirmed once the Election Commission of the LSDP Chairperson receives the original protocols and ballot papers from the branches, which is expected to happen by 29 April. Paluckas' term as LSDP chairman will commence on May 17 following the party congress in Vilnius, and the term lasts two years.
The reigns of the party were held by a few until MEP Vilija Blinkevičiūtė assumed the position in the spring of 2021. She, however, decided not to seek re-election, leading to this power struggle. Previously, the party was led by Paluckas, but he resigned after the LSDP performed poorly in the 2020 general elections. However, the party bounced back in the parliamentary elections last autumn, securing 52 out of 141 seats.
New Direction? Not So Fast
When asked about his plans for the party, Paluckas claimed that he doesn't intend any radical changes. He asserted, "We will certainly not change the direction of the party - we will not abandon the road for an experimental track." While he acknowledged the need for renewal and digitalization within the party, he didn't elaborate on specific strategies or measures.
Paluckas, in his new position, has signaled his intentions to attract more young people to the party and pay more attention to voters in Vilnius. Though he didn't delve into the details, he admitted that attracting the Vilnius electorate would require serious thought and efforts.
As for balancing his lofty party responsibilities with his position as Prime Minister, Paluckas merely stated that time would tell how it would all unfold.
While there are no concrete plans detailed in the recent search results regarding Paluckas' plans for party renewal and digitalization, his previous emphasis on modernizing party structures and embracing digital tools to boost engagement and transparency suggests similar plans for the near future. However, for the most accurate and updated information on Paluckas’ specific plans, it would be advisable to consult recent official statements from the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party or Paluckas himself after his election.
