Lithuanian President steps down along with their Cabinet following allegations of grave misconduct

In a significant political development, Lithuania's Prime Minister, Gintautas Paluckas, has announced his resignation following investigations into questionable business dealings that led to public protests. The resignation leaves a vacancy for the position of Prime Minister.

The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), the strongest force in the Lithuanian parliament, has proposed a candidate for Paluckas' succession. The nominee is Inga Ruginienė, the current Minister of Social Security and Labour. Ruginienė, a political newcomer with a background in trade union activism and labor law, still requires approval from both the Seimas (Lithuanian parliament) and the President.

The interim government, led by Finance Minister Rimantas Sadzius, remains in office until a new cabinet is confirmed. The head of state in Lithuania is President Gitanas Nauseda, who has already met with the new leader of the LSDP in Vilnius. Nauseda has 15 days to propose a candidate for the Prime Minister position to the parliament.

The resignation of the government, according to the Lithuanian constitution, leads to the resignation of the entire government. One of Paluckas' coalition partners called for his resignation due to allegations of conflicts of interest. However, Paluckas denied any wrongdoing until the end, dismissing the allegations as deliberate attacks by political opponents.

Despite the resignation, the ongoing operation of the government is not affected. The resignation occurred in a Baltic EU and NATO country, underscoring the importance of maintaining political stability in the region.

The LSDP will determine its candidate for Paluckas' succession on Wednesday. Until a new cabinet is confirmed, the interim government remains in office. The resignation of the cabinet does not affect the ongoing operation of the government.
