Lithuania Places Significant Importance on Germany in Current Times

The map paints a telling picture - Lithuania's geographical location between Russian exclave Kaliningrad and Putin's ally Belarus has raised concerns about a potential Russian attack, making NATO cooperation a hot topic. But is this security partnership also translating into a burgeoning economic alliance?

With over two decades spent in Lithuania's capital, Vilnius, Dominic Otto, deputy managing director of the German-Baltic Chamber of Commerce, has been a witness to significant events. One such event was the deployment ceremony of the Panzer Brigade 45, marking the first time a large unit of the German Armed Forces was stationed abroad permanently. When hundreds of German soldiers marched onto Cathedral Square in Vilnius late May, Otto was among the onlookers.

Politics Building Trust and Solidarity: Merz and Nauseda's Messages in Lithuania Chancellor Friedrich Merz's and Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda's speeches during the deployment ceremony were building blocks for mutual trust and support, according to Otto. Merz emphasized that "Germany is ready and willing to defend the NATO eastern flank, including Lithuania, in case of an emergency." By 2027, some 4,800 soldiers and 200 civilian personnel are set to be based in Lithuania. With their families likely to reside there as well, it translates to a 'medium-size town' needing to be developed from the ground up, explains Otto. The population's positive sentiment towards the Germans has been growing, especially as many perceive US support as questionable. "Germany is being viewed and demanded as a stronger leader," Otto concludes.

Whether Otto converses with Lithuania's Minister of Economics or Vilnius city administration representatives, he consistently encounters enthusiasm for strengthening economic, cultural, and tourism relations. The underlying sentiment is that the closer the economies become, the more likely Germany would be to come to Lithuania's defense in times of crisis.

Economy Investment Opportunities for German Business in Lithuania Open to foreign investment, Lithuania has long considered Germany an 'honored partner.' Beyond the arms sector, opportunities span mechanical engineering, IT, fintech, biotechnology, and energy infrastructure development. Sustainability is currently the focus area for energy expansion, with Lithuania having successfully disconnected from the Russian power grid since February 2025, connecting instead to the European continental network.

Andrea Sellmann interviewed Dominic Otto for the ntv podcast "Economy World & Wide."

  1. In the discussion about the economic landscape, it's crucial to consider Lithuania, a country that values investments from Germany, particularly in sectors like mechanical engineering, IT, fintech, biotechnology, and energy infrastructure development, with a current focus on sustainability.
  2. As Germany strengthens its economic, cultural, and tourism relations with Lithuania, it's important to note that the Community policy, employment policy, and general-news sources suggest that Lithuanian officials feel that the closer the economies become, the more likely Germany would be to come to Lithuania's defense in times of crisis, considering the growing positive sentiment towards the Germans.
