Liquid Swords' Samson blends chaotic driving and brawling in April 2023 launch

Liquid Swords has announced the release of Samson, an open-city game set to launch on April 8, 2023. The title blends chaotic driving with brawling combat, though early impressions suggest some mechanics may still need refinement. Players take on the role of Samson, a character returning to his debt-ridden hometown with a score to settle.

The studio, founded by Christopher Sandberg, previously worked on Just Cause 2, bringing experience in open-world action to this new project.

The recently unveiled gameplay trailer highlights Samson's core features. Driving mechanics appear fast and engaging, with muscle cars roaring through a decaying industrial city. One standout moment shows Samson wielding a wrench in combat, paired with a witty voiceover line that adds humour to the action.

The game introduces a daily cash quota and an 'action points' system, forcing players into rapid, often reckless choices. These mechanics aim to create a chaotic, high-stakes experience. However, the brawling combat looks underdeveloped, lacking the depth seen in the driving segments.

Visually, the city is richly detailed, with crumbling factories and gritty streets reinforcing the game's grounded tone. Yet, the world feels strangely empty, with few NPCs or signs of life. This sparseness raises concerns about mission variety and whether the city will feel truly alive.

Sandberg's previous work on Just Cause 2 suggests ambition, but the trailer leaves some doubts about Samson's polish. The concept remains intriguing, but questions linger over its execution before launch.

Samson arrives on April 8, 2023, promising a mix of high-speed chases and brawling in a decaying urban playground. The game's driving and aesthetic show potential, though combat and world density may need further refinement. Players eager for a fresh open-city experience will soon see if it delivers on its chaotic vision.
