Lionsgate announces release date for 'Fairyland' with Willa, an exclusive reveal.
In the heart of San Francisco, during the vibrant cultural scene of the 1970s and 1980s, a poignant coming-of-age story unfolds. This is the setting for the upcoming film, "Fairyland," a production by American Zoetrope and co-released by Lionsgate and WILLA.
Based on Alysia Abbott's acclaimed memoir, "Fairyland" chronicles the evolving relationship between a father and daughter amidst an era of bohemian decadence and the sobering reality of the AIDS crisis. The film, directed and written by Andrew Durham, has been praised for its emotional depth and personal storytelling, reminiscent of Sofia Coppola's distinctive style.
Emilia Jones and Scoot McNairy star as Alysia Abbott and her father, Steve Abbott, a gay activist and author. The film also features supporting roles from Maria Bakalova, Cody Fern, Adam Lambert, Geena Davis, and introduces Nessa Dougherty.
"Fairyland" has already garnered critical acclaim following its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. WILLA, led by CEO and founder Elizabeth Woodward, finds the film deeply affecting, while Amelia McPartlon Rogers, EVP of Content Strategy & Marketing Integration for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, has praised its poignant portrayal of family, identity, and resilience in a changing world.
The film has also been a Sundance favorite and is anticipated to be an awards contender after its theatrical release on October 10, 2025. WILLA will launch an integrated impact campaign and audience engagement strategy for "Fairyland."
In addition to Coppola, "Fairyland" is produced by Andrew Durham, Megan Carlson, Laure Sudreau, Siena Oberman, and Greg Lauritano, with Roman Coppola, Megan Carlson, Laure Sudreau, Siena Oberman, and Greg Lauritano serving as executive producers.
"Fairyland" promises to be a gentle, humorous, and deeply personal film that captures a pivotal historical era through a specific yet universal father-daughter relationship. It is a story that resonates with audiences and offers a touching portrayal of family, identity, and resilience in the face of adversity.
